The Re(a)d Line is a collaborative work between David Hage and Dan Waber, and it’s a mix between the crisply digital and the richly analog. “This is who we are” is a theme David has been interested in for some time. The idea of identity is important to his understanding of self, others, existence, and function. For him, it applies both personally and artistically. When Dan first heard David mention “This is who we are,” he wrote it down and realized that these five words could be arranged 120 different ways and that each way could be read as valid. With just a small bit of programming and an ink-jet printer, 120 pre-titled blanks were prepared and presented to David. David responded to the stack of digitally prepared, pre-titled blanks in a manner that calls into question the relation of human creativity to the machine. The permutations are representative of changes in our identity, or more specifically, changes in our perception of identity whether they’re our own or someone else’s. The line represents a sort of physicality that is present in the notion. The + and - at the beginning and end represent energy entering and leaving the system. It's also almost a blood red, which acts as a symbol of life force. Together they combine to form a line of lines that are both red and read. Shown above are 12 of the 120 images from this project. If you’re interested in viewing or exhibiting the whole series of work, please get in touch with David.
